According to Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Eric Schmidt, disinformation around the 2024 election will be rampant because new tools have made advanced artificial intelligence available. Google who co-founded Schmidt Futures.

“The 2024 election will be a mess because social media doesn’t protect us from fake-generated AI,” Schmidt told Andrew Ross Sorkin on CNBC.Squawk Box” on Monday. “They’re working on it, but they haven’t resolved it yet. And in fact, groups of trust and safety shrink, not grow.

While there are widespread concerns about AI’s long-term effects on society, including the potential for the technology to gain human-like abilities, Schmidt said “the short-term danger is misinformation.”

Google recently made a decision stop removing false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 US election from YouTube. It said the decision seeks to balance its goals of protecting the community and being a forum for open discussion.

Asked about the policy change, Schmidt said social media should allow “free speech for people, not computers.”

“Social media should flag all content, know who the users are, and hold people accountable if they break the law,” Schmidt said. “It doesn’t solve the problem that you and I don’t agree on the facts, but at least it establishes the basis that these are the people making these claims.”
