Prigozhin says the convoys are returning to bases

by admin

Wagner’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said he had given orders to turn convoys heading for Moscow back to their bases to avoid bloodshed.

Belarusian President Lukashenko, speaking with Putin, said he had spoken with Prigozhin and put an agreement on the table that would guarantee the safety of the Wagner fighters.

Sounds more like a de-escalation than a solution to me. Perhaps Prigozhin thought that other wings of the Russian army would join him, or perhaps he was just playing for time. Until the weapons are folded, it looks more like a stalemate. It is hard to imagine that there is any way to return to the status quo of last week in Russia, whatever that is.

At this point, I’d say the risks of weekend regime change in Russia have just dropped sharply, but it’s still only Saturday.
